INSTALLING YOUR WALL MOUNTED SHELVES   •   WALL ANCHORS TO MOUNT SHELVES   •   DRILLING INTO THE STUDS

What to consider when mounting wall shelves

Before you head on over to the home improvement center to buy some wall mounted shelves there are a few things that you'll want to consider. First, do you know what kind of items that you'll be placing on the shelf? How deep does the shelf need to be to properly store these items? Finally, how long does the shelf need to be?

Why are these questions important for picking out your wall mounted shelf? Well, it's important to know what kind of load the wall shelf needs to support, and how many wall studs you'll be able to drill into to support the shelf properly.

Knowing these little bits of information is going to properly assist you in pricking out the right wall shelving system and brackets. If the shelf rips off of the wall because there is too much weight on it somebody could get seriously hurt. The other effect would be that the drywall would would break around the hole mounts (because it’s not as strong as wood) and need to be repaired.

Using wall Anchors to mount shelves

If drilling or screwing into wooden wall studs is going to be a problem, you'll want to use plastic wall anchors to mount your screws. By first drilling holes with a drill bit and inserting anchors, you'll drastically reduce the chance of stripping out the screw and/or damaging the sheet rock due to heavy loads or thin sheet rock walls.

Drilling into studs for wall mounted shelves

If you have an electric stud finder for your wall mounted shelf project you're on the right track. If you don't have one, aside from the "knocking" technique, drilling very small test holes for your shelf supports is highly recommended. This will allow you to assure that your bracket is located at a stud without causing much damage to the integrity of the sheet rock material. Once you find one stud, measure 16" over and drill another test hole. Make sure all brackets are screwed into wall studs before mounting your wall shelf.
